A escultura de homenagem à varina, esculpida por Rui Fernandes e inaugurada em 2003, encontra-se instalada no centro da cidade, entre o Mercado Municipal e o edifício dos Paços do Concelho.
Figura ligada à tradição da cidade de Vila Franca de Xira, a varina é proveniente de Ovar, Murtosa e outras localidades da Beira Litoral, tendo aqui chegado em busca de trabalho, entre o final do séc. XIX e início do século XX, acabando por fixar residência.
As varinas trabalhavam na venda do peixe percorrendo quilómetros com a canastra à cabeça. Com o passar dos anos as suas vendas passaram a ter lugar essencialmente no mercado municipal.
Monument to the Varina The homage sculpture to the varina, sculpted by Rui Fernandes and inaugurated in 2003, is installed in the center of the city, between the Municipal Market and the Town Hall.
Linked to the tradition of the city of Vila Franca de Xira, the varina came from Ovar, Murtosa and other places from the Coastal Shore, having arrived here searching for work, between the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, ending up establishing residence.
The varinas worked on the fish sale, travelling kilometers with the traditional basket on their heads. As the years went by, their sales started to took place essencialy in the Municipal Market.
